Take
one of the world’s
most beautiful voyages
back in time on the old
Tren a las Nubes (Train
of the Clouds) as it transports
you up high into the Andes.
Travel with the locals
as they climb ever-higher
into the mountains from
Salta “the beautiful” to
the Altiplano or Puna (as
its variously known),a
mysterious and beautiful
landscape touching the
sky at 12,200 feet above
sea level.
Enjoy
a dizzying 500 kilometre circuit
to the Calchaquies Valley where
you will discover colonial villages,
archaeological sites and the historic
small town of Cafayate where the
famous white wine “Torrontes” is
produced. This city is home to
numerous vineyards and wineries
that offer wine tours and tasting.
Due to its microclimate and special
soil conditions the area is ideal
for the production of internationally
renowned wines, such as the Malbec
and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties.
You
will depart from Jujuy
for a tour of the Quebrada
de Humahuaca, a marvellous
valley high in the Andes.
This valley was declared
a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 2003 because of
its significance as a crucial
passage for the transport
of people and ideas from
the high Andean lands to
the plains throughout the
past 10,000 years.
A highlight of this high
valley tour is a visit to
the awesome Cerro
de los Sietes Colores (Seven
Color Mountains) in Jujuy. This
unique hill displays a multicoloured
rainbow formed by grains
of rich mineral earth. At
its feet you will be impressed
by the small indigenous village
of Purmamarca, a village
that is virtually isolated
from the world. Further,
you will visit “Pucará de
Tilcara” a fortified
town built in pre Colombian
times. The town boasts a
monolith which marks the
Tropic of Capricorn which
passes through the town – a
must-stop photo opportunity.
Enjoy
para-gliding in the area of San
Lorenzo, four-wheel motor biking,
tour and mountain biking, bird-watching,
horseback riding and trekking around
Salta, fishing, off-roading, rafting,
kayaking and floating in the Juramento
river…
